Headaches
Feeling pain or pressure in the head is very common.
Headaches can be caused by stress, not enough sleep, hunger, flu, sinus problems, too much alcohol, allergies, or more serious illnesses like head injuries, stroke or brain tumours.
HOW TO TREAT AT HOME
Get more sleep and rest
Headache can be treated by over-the-counter painkillers, such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Speak to your pharmacist if you are unsure how to take the medication, especially if you have any allergies, other medical conditions or are currently on other medications
SEE YOUR PHARMACIST IF:
You need further advice on how to manage your symptoms. Your pharmacist can also recommend other medications for your condition or advise if you need to see a GP, or visit the emergency department
SEE YOUR GP IF:
Your headache lasts for more than one day, even after taking over-the-counter pain relievers
You get headaches frequently (i.e., more than 15 days in a month)
The pain or throbbing is so strong you cannot go about your daily routine
Your headache develops after a head injury (e.g., falling)
You are experiencing nausea or vomiting
GO TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING:
Headaches that come with any of the following:
Stiff neck
Feeling confused
Weakness or numbness in your limbs
Blurred vision
Difficulty speaking
Fits or seizures, e.g. your body is shaking spasmodically, or becomes rigid with arched back, clenched jaw, and eyes rolling upwards
