Quarantine and Epidemiology
Annual Report 2002
Preface
To safeguard the health of the Singapore population, epidemiological surveillance and research of infectious diseases are carried out to monitor the disease situation, identify outbreaks, and to formulate and evaluate prevention and control strategies. This annual publication is a compilation of the surveillance and research activities carried out by the Quarantine and Epidemiology Department, Ministry of the Environment, in the year 2002. It covers all the notifiable vector-borne, food-borne, vaccine-preventable and environment-related diseases, except tuberculosis, leprosy, sexually-transmitted diseases and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
This document should serve as a useful source of reference for public health administrators involved in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of communicable disease policies and programmes. It also provides relevant scientific materials for teaching and research institutions.
It is hoped that this publication, which is a product of the joint efforts of all medical and environmental health officers of the department, will continue to serve as a useful compendium for the monitoring and research of infectious diseases in Singapore.
