Preface
The year 2004 was one of building on existing relationships and strengthening preparedness strategies. The Ministry of Health together with the National Environment Agency and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority combined efforts in the latter half of 2004 to tackle the increase in dengue fever and outbreaks of food-borne illnesses. Much was learnt in our joint responses to these challenges and it has paved the way for us to effectively deal with new public health threats in the future.
Within the Communicable Diseases Division, the consolidation of communicable disease policy, surveillance and disease control through our learning experience from the SARS outbreak in 2003, has greatly enhanced our readiness to respond to the threat of avian influenza and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
This annual report presents epidemiological information on communicable diseases obtained through community, institutional and laboratory surveillance together with the outcomes of outbreak investigations. This report would not be possible without the long term commitment of our medical colleagues working at the front line. We are indeed grateful to them for their continued vigilance and support of our efforts to minimize the threat of communicable diseases.
