3. Healthcare Professionals Regulation
In Singapore, the registration of healthcare professionals is managed by the various Professional Boards. These boards determine the appropriate standards healthcare professionals would need to abide by.
The registration and regulation of healthcare professionals come under the ambit of the healthcare Professional Boards and Councils (“Professional Boards”) in Singapore. They maintain the various Registers of healthcare professionals, govern, and regulate their professional conduct and ethics.
The Professional Boards are as follows:
Allied Health Professions Council oversees the regulation of allied health professionals under the Allied Health Professions Act 2011. The five groups of professionals currently regulated are diagnostic radiographers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiation therapists and speech-language therapists;
Optometrists & Opticians Board oversees the regulation of optometrists and opticians under the Optometrists & Opticians Act 2007;
Singapore Dental Council oversees the regulation of dentists and oral health therapists under the Dental Registration Act 1999;
Singapore Medical Council oversees the regulation of medical practitioners (doctors) under the Medical Registration Act 1997;
Singapore Nursing Board oversees the regulation of nurses and midwives under the Nurses and Midwives Act 1999;
Singapore Pharmacy Council oversees the regulation of pharmacists under the Pharmacists Registration Act 2007; and
Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board oversees the regulation of TCM physicians and acupuncturists under the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Act 2000.
Individuals who wish to practise any of the above professions in Singapore must apply to be granted registration and obtain a practising certificate from the respective Professional Boards.
