With reference to ST's Salma Khalik's article on Monday, 3 May 2004, the Ministry of Health would like to clarify the following: NUH is the only public sector hospital able to perform liver transplants at the moment (cadaveric as well as adult-to-paediatric living donor liver transplant). NUH expects to start its right lobe liver adult-to-adult living transplant surgery service next year. In the interim, NUH will buy this right-lobe liver adult-to-adult living transplant surgery service from Gleneagles Hospital at market rate. Gleneagles Hospital will not be asked to subsidise these patients. The patient will pay at the subsidised rate which he would enjoy when NUH is able to provide this service next year. About 3-4 patients would benefit from this arrangement. SGH will start their cadaveric liver transplant programme in July 2004, after the amendments to the Human Transplant Act are implemented. The Ministry of Health and our public hospitals are committed to ensure that medical costs remain affordable to all subsidised Singaporean patients.
