A 11 month old male infant who was admitted to KKH on 21 Feb, after being diagnosed with HFMD by a general practitioner on 20 Feb, died this morning. He was diagnosed clinically to have encephalitis secondary to an infection with Enterovirus 71 (EV71).
His twin brother, who also had fever and was admitted at the same time, has since recovered and been discharged.
Update on cases of HFMD reported
In the past three days (from Sunday to Tuesday), a total of 111 cases were reported, compared to 141 cases reported in the whole of last week. The average over the first 3 weeks of Jan 2001 was 162 per week. This was followed by an average of 110 per week in the past five weeks.
As at 12 noon today, there were two cases in hospital. Both are in stable condition.
There is no sign of any outbreak. The Taskforce will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep the public informed of any new developments.
