There has been another local dengue death, the sixth this year. The patient was a 84-year-old Singaporean Eurasian male with multiple chronic medical conditions. He was admitted to National University Hospital on 22 Aug 07 after complaining of abdominal and back pain. Tests showed that he had contracted dengue haemorrhagic fever. His condition deteriorated rapidly whilst in hospital. He passed away on 30 Aug 07.
Public to remain vigilant
MOH advises the public to seek medical attention immediately if they feel unwell and have a fever. If they are diagnosed by the doctor to have dengue, they should follow the doctor's advice and ensure that they have adequate rest and drink enough water to prevent dehydration. Suspect or confirmed dengue patients should protect themselves and their household members from mosquito bites by using, for example, mosquito repellent, mosquito coils or mosquito nets and by wearing protective clothing. This will help protect their families from contracting the disease and break the chain of transmission.
