Since it began operations in Myanmar on Saturday, Singapore’s medical relief team has treated some 500 patients, mainly for respiratory complaints, skin infections, and gastroenteritis. Operating from a 2-storey building in the township of Twan Te (about an hour’s drive from Yangon), the team has been providing medical coverage at the 50-bed Twan Te hospital, as well as operating two mobile medical clinics providing medical support at relief camps and medical stations.
Following the team’s arrival on 22 May 2008, the MOH team had linked up with Singapore Red Cross (SRC) and Mercy Relief (MR) team members already on-site. MOH, SRC, and MR have combined their efforts and resources to work under a unified Team Singapore. On 23 and 24 May 2008, two medical personnel from MR and one from MOH arrived in Myanmar to reinforce Team Singapore.
The original MOH team made up of healthcare personnel from various hospitals and institutions in the SingHealth and National Healthcare Group clusters which left on 22 May 2008, had brought with them some 250kg of medical supplies. Another 730kg of medical supplies reached Team Singapore on 25 May 2008.
On 24 May 2008, Mr George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs, visited the team. MOH will provide progressive updates on the deployment effort.
