SINGAPORE EMERGENCY MEDICAL TEAM TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN MYANMAR RELIEF EFFORTS
3 April 2025
The Ministry of Health has deployed the Singapore Emergency Medical Team (SGEMT) on 3 April 2025 to Myanmar to provide humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Myanmar. This marks the first deployment of the SGEMT since it was launched in September 2024.
2. Operating like a field hospital, the SGEMT is equipped to provide medical care, including emergency services, primary care, and maternal and child health outpatient care to more than 100 patients daily. This capability enables the team to provide rapid and effective medical support during emergencies, both locally and internationally, enhancing Singapore's role in global and regional disaster relief efforts.
3. The team comprises 34 healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals from our public healthcare institutions, as well as personnel with technical and logistics expertise. They are expected to be on-site for the next 14 days.
4. Prior to their departure, Minister for Health Mr Ong Ye Kung met with the SGEMT and their family members at Changi Airport to express his appreciation of their contributions to the global relief efforts. Mr Ong said, “Singapore stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar during this difficult time. Our officers in the SGEMT will work closely with the local authorities and fellow disaster relief agencies and teams to provide medical care and assistance to the victims of this natural disaster.”
5. Singapore’s assistance focuses on providing immediate relief and supporting recovery efforts in coordination with local and international partners. Beyond the deployment of Operation Lionheart by the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Singapore Government has also mobilised two Republic of Singapore Air Force transport aircraft to deliver humanitarian aid supplies to Myanmar. The SGEMT deployment further reflects our ongoing commitment to address urgent humanitarian needs and support recovery efforts for regional stability.
