There has been another local dengue death, the seventh this year. The latest victim was a 53-year old Chinese lady from Bedok Reservoir Road who came down with fever, body ache, lethargy and rash on 2 Sept 07. She was treated for viral fever at a company clinic on 3 Sept 07 and at a polyclinic on 4 Sept 07. On 6 Sept 07, she was admitted to Changi General Hospital for weakness and chest pain. Blood tests showed that she was infected with dengue. Her condition deteriorated very rapidly the next day. She passed away on 7 Sept 07. Dengue shock syndrome had been determined as the cause of death.
Public to remain vigilant
MOH advises the public to seek medical attention immediately if they feel unwell and have a fever. If they are diagnosed by the doctor to have dengue, they should follow the doctor's advice and ensure that they have adequate rest and drink enough water to prevent dehydration. Suspect or confirmed dengue patients should protect themselves and their household members from mosquito bites by using, for example, mosquito repellent, mosquito coils/mats or mosquito nets and by wearing protective clothing. This will help protect their families from contracting the disease and break the chain of transmission.
