NEW 2-YEAR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (NURSING) PROGRAMME TO ATTRACT MORE MID-CAREER SINGAPOREANS TO JOIN NURSING
The Ministry of Health (MOH) and Workforce Singapore (WSG) are expanding the Healthcare Professional Conversion Programmes (PCPs) with the introduction of a new degree level programme for Nursing at the National University of Singapore’s Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (NUS Nursing). This is in line with one of the strategies under the Healthcare Industry Transformation Map (ITM) to build a strong local core in healthcare by providing multiple pathways for mid-career Singaporeans to join the sector.
The new degree level Professional Conversion Programme for Registered Nurses (PCP-RN (Degree)) is targeted at mid-career Singaporeans with a prior degree qualification in any discipline other than Nursing.
Starting from July 2018, the PCP-RN (Degree) will be offered as a two-year Bachelor of Science (Nursing) programme at NUS Nursing. Under the PCP-RN (Degree), course fees of $74,500 will be fully sponsored and trainees will also receive training allowances of $2,170 to $2,520 per month throughout the two years of training, depending on their years of prior work experience. Upon graduation, they will also receive a one-time Career Transition Bonus of $2,000. An on-the-job training incentive of $18,000 per mid-career degree trained Registered Nurse will be provided to employers to enable them to better support these nurses in their transition to a new career. For more information on the PCP-RN (Degree), please refer to Annex A.
The PCP-RN (Degree) will be in addition to the existing two-year accelerated PCP-RN at the diploma level which is conducted by Nanyang Polytechnic and targeted at mid-career Singaporeans with ‘A’ level and diploma qualifications. Since 2003, over 1,000 mid-career professionals have participated in the Healthcare PCPs, of whom around 800 were in Nursing and 200 were in Allied Health Professions (AHPs). MOH will continue to work closely with WSG and healthcare industry partners to explore and develop new PCPs for other professions in the healthcare industry.
Speaking at the Career Preview for the two-year Bachelor of Science (Nursing) at NUS Nursing, Senior Minister of State for Health Dr Amy Khor said “There has been a growing interest in nursing. In recent years, we have seen an increase of about 33% in our total nursing intake from 1,500 in 2012 to around 2,000 in 2017. The introduction of the new two-year degree level Professional Conversion Programme for Registered Nurses makes it more attractive for mid-career Singaporeans who have a prior degree in other disciplines to join the nursing profession. This is aligned with the Ministry of Health’s effort to build a strong local core of nurses in the healthcare workforce as we face an ageing population and rising incidence of chronic diseases.”
Mr Tan Choon Shian, WSG’s Chief Executive, said “The development of the PCP-RN (Degree) with MOH and healthcare industry partners signifies WSG’s support and efforts in expanding and tapping on the various manpower sources available in the labour market. This is especially important as we strive to meet growing manpower needs in the growth sectors such as healthcare, and help mid-career Singaporeans take on new job opportunities in these growth sectors.”
Applications for the PCP-RN (Degree) is now open until 2 March 2018. Mid-career Singaporeans who are keen to join the healthcare sector as nurses can visit WSG’s PCP website at (http://www.wsg.gov.sg/programmes-and-initiatives/professional-conversion-programmes/registered-nurses-degree.html) to find out more or to apply for the programme.
