Introduction
The 2004 National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign will be launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on 5 September 2004 at Sentosa. The theme this year is "Fighting Obesity". Our focus will be on encouraging Singaporeans to "Fit health into your life now - Exercise & Eat Right". The key message is that healthy living can be fun and done both individually and as a group within families, schools and workplaces.
NHLC Launch 2004
When the National Healthy Lifestyle Programme was initiated in 1992, it was envisaged that the public, private and people sectors will work together to improve the health of Singaporeans by promoting healthy lifestyles. In line with this vision, the MOH family, including MOH HQ, the Health Promotion Board, the Health Sciences Authority and the 2 healthcare clusters, has taken an all-embracing approach in organising this year's NHLC launch. We have brought together other public and private sector stakeholders in the health and fitness industries as our partners and sponsors for the event, including the Singapore Sports Council, F&N Coca-Cola, Guardian Health & Beauty and Planet Fitness (the full list of partners and sponsors are at Annex A). In terms of participants, we are expecting more than 12,000 representatives from our public and private hospitals (including family members), healthcare professional bodies, workplaces, schools, community and handicapped groups, as well as members of the public.
To drive home the message that healthy living can be fun and done both individually and as a group within families, schools and workplaces, the launch will kick off with a 1.8 km "Step with It, Singapore" Walk-A-Jog, followed by a 30-minute "Get Fit, Singapore" workout for registered participants, specially choreographed and led by Planet Fitness instructors. Various segments of the launch will be telecast live on Channel News Asia, Channel 5 and TV Mobile from 9.30 am to 10.00 am.
Following this, Tanjong Beach will be transformed into a Health and Fitness Carnival, which is open to all from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (normal admission fee to Sentosa applies). The carnival, which aims to reach out to more Singaporeans in a fun and interesting way, and provide a more comprehensive message regarding healthy lifestyle, will be thematically organised into six "alleys":
The Health and Fitness Alley, which will offer free checks for body mass index (BMI), body fat, blood pressure and bone mass density, dental checks and fitness assessments. There will also be general health and nutrition counselling conducted by dieticians and pharmacists. The hospital clusters will provide information on disease management tools which Singaporeans can use to better manage their health. Apart from helping out with the health checks Guardian Health & Beauty will provide demonstrations of exercises which can be done in the home environment. Planet Fitness will also be conducting exercise challenges;
The Sports Alley where there will be various sports demonstrations by the National Sports Associations (NSAs), including dragon boat rowing, beach netball, in-line skating and ultimate frisbee. The public will be given a chance to try out some of these sports activities;
The Health Street Alley, which will feature line dancing, head/shoulder and foot massage by the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and recruitment drives for the 2nd season of the "Fat-to-Fit" programme and the Standard Chartered 2004 marathon;
The Healthy Food alley providing a wide range of healthy food and snacks as well as nutrition-related information;
The Children's Alley featuring fitness- and sports-related activities targeted at children; and
The Interactive Alley where there will be telematches, rock-climbing and joust fighting, among many other exciting games.
As part of the launch, we are also hoping to set two new Singapore records related to health and fitness with the help of Record Breakers Singapore. We will be attempting to record the greatest number of steps using the stepometers sponsored by F&N Coca Cola and the greatest number of health checks in a single health event.
In addition, following the launch, a host of health activities for the month of September has been lined up. These include Singapore Sports Council's Open House to its swimming pools and ClubFITT gyms, Planet Fitness' Open House to its fitness clubs and various health forums, exhibitions and screenings. Guardian Health & Beauty will also run a series of health tips on Channel News Asia throughout the campaign month. The list of activities during the campaign month is at Annex B.
