At Budget 2009, the Government announced that a special once-off $15 million would be made available this year to support the voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs).
2 The Ministry of Health (MOH) will receive $5 million of this funding to help charities involved in healthcare service provision to tide over the current economic downturn. This will enable charities that are finding it hard to meet their operating expenditure to keep their beds and services open for patients, and not turn them away during this period.
3 There are about 160 charities involved in healthcare services. They will be eligible to apply for this funding. They will be receiving a letter from MOH with application details which will include the provision of necessary supporting documents to justify their financial needs. The deadline for application is 30 April 2009.
4 An Assessment Panel chaired by Deputy Secretary (Health Policy) Mr Roy Quek, with senior representatives from MOH and NCSS, has been set up to assess the applications. The amount of funding to be given will depend on financial needs. Details are also available at VWO Contingency Fund Application
