Inaugural Medical Excellence Awards Pay Tribute to Outstanding Clinicians and Clinicians Scientists

Awardees reflect Singapore’s pursuit in medical and research excellence against backdrop of our biomedical sciences initiatives.
Four doctors and two teams were awarded the inaugural National Medical Excellence Awards by the Ministry of Health. The awards recognize individuals and teams who have contributed significantly in clinical work, research and the mentoring of younger clinicians in our healthcare institutions. Their work has led to positive outcomes in healthcare delivery that have benefited our patients.
The awardees come from a varied background including paediatric nephrology, surgical oncology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology research, mental health and perinatal care. Their contributions have not only benefited patients in Singapore but also gained international recognition from their fellow peers. They will be role models for Singapore’s younger generations of clinicians and clinician scientists. The existence of such individuals in our healthcare institutions preceding the biomedical sciences initiatives is a testimony of our clinicians’ commitment to medical excellence and better care for our people.
A total of 6 awards were presented to four individuals and two teams.
National Outstanding Clinician Mentor Award:
• Professor Lee Eng Hin &
• Professor Soo Khee Chee
This award recognizes individuals who have contributed substantially in the training of young clinicians and clinician scientists via mentorship or by virtue of academic positions.
National Outstanding Clinician Award:
• Professor Yap Hui Kim
This award recognizes individuals with exceptional contributions to clinical work that advances the safety and quality of patient care, and in addition has supported and facilitated research. The awardee has successfully introduced novel / effective treatment methods resulting in high standard of quality healthcare delivery and is recognized by one’s peers as being a master clinician.
National Outstanding Clinician Scientist Award:
• Professor Donald Tan
This award recognizes individuals with outstanding contributions to clinical and translational research work relating to their fields of specialty. The research work resulted in novel understanding of diseases with potential positive outcome on healthcare delivery.
National Clinical Excellence Team Award:
• EPIP Team from Institute of Mental Health represented by:

- Ms Poon Lye Yin
- Ms Helen Lee
• Perinatal Team from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital represented by:
- A/Prof Tan Kok Hian
- A/Prof Alex Sia
- Dr Pratibha Agarwal
- Sister Hoon Siew Jong
This award recognizes teams or organizations that have undertaken a clinical and translational work relating to their field of specialty that succeeded in making an outstanding contribution to patient safety and care through exemplary innovative transfer of positive research outcomes.
