Five receive accolades for medical excellence

1. Four doctors and one clinician scientist each received the 2009 National Medical Excellence Awards from the Ministry of Health. The annual Awards recognise excellence in the fields of clinical research and medicine.
2. The distinguished recipients have each contributed to the advancement of clinical work, medical research, and academic medicine. Their work has resulted in better patient care and novel treatments.
3. The awardees also played an important role in the training and mentoring of clinicians and clinician scientists during the course of their professional careers. Their work and contributions are testimony to Singapore's commitment to excellence in healthcare and research.
4. The awardees come from various medical and research backgrounds: gastroenterology & hepatology, dentistry, paediatric neurology, cognitive neuroscience and medical oncology.
5. This is the second year that MOH is giving the awards.
National Outstanding Clinician Mentor Award
Professor Chew Chong Lin, National University Health System
Professor Low Poh Sim, National University Health System
Professor Ng Han Seong, Singapore General Hospital
This award recognizes individuals who have contributed substantially in the training of young clinicians and clinician scientists through mentorship.
National Outstanding Clinician Award
Professor John Wong Eu Li, National University Health System
This award recognizes individuals for their exceptional contributions to clinical work through advances in the safety and quality of patient care. In addition the individual has supported and facilitated research and or successfully introduced novel / effective treatment in his clinical practice. The individual is also recognized by one's peers as being a master clinician.
National Outstanding Clinician Scientist Award
Professor Michael Chee Wei Liang, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore
6. This award recognizes individuals with outstanding contributions to clinical and translational research in their specialty. The research work has resulted in better understanding of diseases with potential positive outcome on healthcare delivery.
