A 60 year old Chinese woman is the eighth person here to die of dengue this year. The housewife from Jurong East developed fever and body ache on 9 Sept 07 and consulted a GP. She was given medication and her fever subsided for two days. However, she became unwell again on 12 Sept 07 and was admitted to NUH for giddiness and abdominal discomfort. Tests showed that she had contracted dengue. Her condition deteriorated rapidly and she passed away on 15 Sept 07 from Dengue Shock Syndrome.
Public to remain vigilant
MOH advises the public to seek medical attention immediately if they feel unwell and have a fever. If they are diagnosed by the doctor to have dengue, they should follow the doctor's advice and ensure that they have adequate rest and drink enough water to prevent dehydration. Suspect or confirmed dengue patients should protect themselves and their household members from mosquito bites by using, for example, mosquito repellent, mosquito coils/mats or mosquito nets and by wearing protective clothing. This will help protect their families from contracting the disease and break the chain of transmission.
