The Ministry of Health organised its first Community Health Event for some 450 students from the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) on 18th October 2001. Putting its expertise on health promotion to good use, the Ministry organised educational talks on healthy lifestyles, exercise and nutrition. The students from Tanglin and Delta Senior Schools also got the chance to try out some healthy exercises, have their heights and weights measured, and walked through the Heathzone. To enable the students to have a fun-filled day, the Ministry's staff also put together a mini funfair that included food and games stalls.
The Ministry adopted the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) as its community involvement group. MOH-HQ staff raised $13,000 for APSN, collected through past volunteer activities, such as the sale of fruits and Walk-a-Jog events.
Besides the Community Health Event Day, the Ministry will be organising more activities in the coming months as part of its drive to encourage greater corporate volunteerism and to get all staff together for a charitable cause.
Singapore Kindness Movement's Corporate Membership
The Community Health Event also marked the Ministry's joining the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) as a corporate member. The membership signifies MOH's identification with SKM's mission to inspire graciousness among every one of us. This is in line with Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong's call for Singaporeans to develop into a more caring and gracious society in the new millennium.
The Ministry hopes to imbue in staff a greater sense of belonging and spirit to the community and to encourage the building of a caring and gracious organisation.
