Breast Cancer in Singapore
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Singapore. Every year, 200 to 250 women die from the disease.
Most cancers in the breast are painless and may go unnoticed. However, early detection can save the breast and the woman's life! It is our hope that awareness of this disease and the subsequent early detection by mammographic screening will result in earlier diagnosis and higher cure rates.
To raise public awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and screening, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Committee comprising Breast Cancer Foundation, National Cancer Centre, Singapore Cancer Society and Ministry of Health will be organising various activities for the public. (Please refer to Annex 1 for details of the activities.)
Focus of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2000
The focus this year is "family support". Breast cancer affects the whole family and one of the motivating factors for a woman to go for early screening is the support from family members. The Committee hopes to garner active support of family members to encourage women aged 50 years and older to go for mammography.
Mammography
A mammogram is a simple breast X-ray examination that can detect breast cancer in the early stages, even before the cancerous lump can be felt by breast self-examination. It is then possible to remove the cancer completely and safely and save the breast.
All women who are 50 years and older should go for a mammogram every 2 years.
For the month of October, 18 hospitals and X-ray centres will give a discount on mammograms. (Please see Annex 2 for details).
Carry the Message Home
NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Ltd will support the Breast Cancer Awareness Month by having the message "Early Detectioni Saves Livesi Saves Breasts" on their carrier bags during the month of October.
