Autologous blood transfusion has helped to reduce the demand for homologous blood transfusion. But its contribution remains small. The number and percentage of units of autologous blood transfused in the last 3 years were 1,172 units, or 1.8% in 2003, 1,083 units or 1.5% in 2004 and 866 units or 1.1% in 2005.
The percentage of elective surgeries requiring blood in the last 3 years where autologous blood was used was 5.7% in 2003, 4.5% in 2004, and 3.8% in 2005.
