100 nurses were honoured by the Ministry of Health at the Nurses’ Merit Award 2015 for their outstanding performance and dedication to the nursing profession. This year commemorates the 130th year of nursing in Singapore and also sees the largest number of award recipients since the annual Awards started in 1976.
2 Hailing from the intermediate and long-term care sector, private hospitals and public healthcare institutions, the award recipients each received a medal, to be worn as part of the nurses’ uniform, and a monetary gift of $1,000, up from $200 in previous years. The cash awards can be used to support nurses' professional and personal development and learning.
3 The increase in the award value was one of the National Nursing Taskforce’s recommendations on raising recognition of nurses’ work. The Taskforce was set up in 2012 to review and chart the future direction of the nursing profession, and had submitted 15 recommendations in the areas of Career Development, Autonomy, Recognition and Education. All 15 recommendations were accepted by the Ministry of Health on 6 August 2014 and will be implemented in stages.
4 In her speech at the Nurses’ Merit Awards 2015 Dinner and Dance, Senior Minister of State for Health Dr Amy Khor thanked the nurses for their dedication to their patients and reiterated the Ministry’s continued efforts to support and promote the nursing profession.
